About Shaba National Reserve

Getting its name from the massive volcanic rock that dominates the region, the Shaba National Reserve is a part of the Born Free Country. It has been made famous by the popular conservationist Joy Adamson named Elsa the Lioness. Located along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, to the north of Mount Kenya, the Shaba National Reserve is also lined with doum palm trees.

Known particularly for its rich wildlife and birdlife, the Shaba National Reserve is also a protected area in Isiolo County in northern Kenya. Together with the Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves, it forms a large protected area in the country.

The Shaba National Reserve is located in the Kenyan Rift Valley and is home to a diverse array of flora. The reserve is home to over 1,000 species of plants, including acacias, cedars, cypresses, and palms. The reserve is home to acacia trees, grasslands, and riverine forests.
