About Nairobi National Park

Although the Park is not as large as the other wildlife parks in Kenya, the Nairobi National Park is home to a truly diverse variety of animals, birds and plant species. The Park is home to over 50 different varieties of animals including four of the Big Fives. The place also has one of the most successful Black Rhino conservation programs in the continent.

Another unique feature of the Nairobi National Park is its diverse landscape. Most of it is open plains, grasslands and a random scattering of Acacia trees while the rest has rocky gorges, broken bushes, river forest and highland forests.

Flora and Fauna of Nairobi National Park

Flora

The Park is predominantly open grass plain with randomly scattered Acacia bushes. The western uplands of the Park is mostly covered by highland dry forest with Olea africana, Croton dichogamus, Brachylaena hutchinsii, and Calodendrum. The lower slopes of the Park have a variety of Themeda, Cypress, Digitaria, and Cynodon. There are also a few scattered yellow-barked Acacia xanthophloea and a riverine forest along the river in the southern part of the Park.

Fauna

Nairobi National Park is home to a diverse variety of animals and this is one of the best wildlife parks where you can get a good view of the famous African Predator species. You can enjoy a close encounter with predators like lions, leopards, Cheetah and hyenas. Besides these, you can also see the black rhino, eland, gazelles, impalas, giraffes, wildebeest, water bucks and many more.

The Park is also a haven for the ungulates such as hartebeest, Thomson's gazelles, Grant's gazelles, impalas and eland. There is also a wide variety of bird species which will be a pure delight for bird watches. Some of the most commonly seen bird species here are black-necked heron, grand hornbill, kori bustards, crowned crane, Egyptian goose, vultures and ostrich.
